A sub-contract machine shop in Canada, they were regularly producing a range of blocks which were part of a welded assembly. They had a tolerance of 0.025mm on position and diameter of a hole which also needed a 0.8mm chamfer on top and bottom. Although it seemed like a relatively easy part, it presented its own problems.
Before, they used manually chamfer the bottom side with a countersink in an electric drill. But, the bottom chamfer quality was inconsistent and cause rejections. Customer need to check the whole batch. It was very time-consuming.
After, they replaced with Nine9 Chamfer Mill to chamfer #on_top_and_bottom. The cycle time was reduced to 1 minute and 6 seconds which took 2 minutes and 40 seconds to complete the job before.
They now produce a batch of 1200 parts in two days where it used to take a week. Besides the cycle time, the biggest benefit is they make a part without any secondary operations and get zero rejects because of precise positioning. The customer saved a lot of time for checking and made good quality products.
